Name: Mark Mac Music Style: House, Techno Outlar-Listed Events: 39 Outlar Cross-references: Claude VonStroke, Sasha, Skream, Luke Solomon, Tim Sheridan, Konrad Black, Arron Hunter, David Duriez, Clive Henry, Simian Mobile Disco, Gabriel Ananda, Chibuku, Circus, Cream, Coco De Mer, The Magnet, Korova Mark Mac Intro: Mark McEvoy is certainly one of the most promising talents to erupt from Liverpool’s vibrant dance music scene in the last few years. The word meteoric gets bandied around all too easily these days, yet it can be easily used with a degree of aplomb for this young house and techno whippersnapper. In little over a year Mark has gone from relative obscurity to being one of the defining figures in the city, all the while making overtures beyond the scouse battalion’s outer realms. As the main promoter of underground sensation Coco De Mer, Mark has been an integral force in the revitalisation of Liverpool’s small club scene. The clubnight has become synonymous with the revitalised Magnet venue, crafting sterling offerings of house and techno every second Saturday of the month. Ame, Luke Solomon, Konrad Black, Tim Sheridan, Gabriel Ananda and Pan Pot are several of the huge artists that Coco De Mer and Mark have brought to Liverpool in little over a year, adding zest and ingenuity to the city’s scene. This isn’t Mark’s first forage, an earlier promotion under the guise of FreakdiFascino brought Claude VonStroke to the city for the first time alongside David Duriez and Clive Henry, but it represents the start of McEvoy’s lasting Liverpool legacy. Such efforts have hardly gone unnoticed by the rest of the city’s community, least of all at the scene leaders over at Chibuku Shake Shake and Circus. Having watched Coco De Mer’s rise with respect and intrigue, Chibuku asked Mark and fellow resident Arron Hunter to host the bar for a full five hours last October, the first time a Liverpool club had done so on a guest based night in over three years. Alongside Simian Mobile Disco, Andy C and Skream, it took the Coco De Mer sound to a new audience, cementing their place in the city’s pantheon. This then resulted in the pair being asked back for further dates at Chibuku and Circus afterparties at both Korova and The Magnet, most notably on NYE, becoming the go-to-guys for the late hedonistic vibe. It’s perhaps the after hours format which stylistically suits Mark the most. Energetically layering all forms of house music, it’s his ability to skip between the deeper and more effervescent tracks alongside the wonkier, darker techno based moments that gives his off kilter vibe. Always flawlessly mixed, Jack’s groove has rarely sounded so infectious or so menacing, and it’s led to the bookings streaming through from other parts of the country. Newcastle’s Evolution Festival asked Mark to showcase his sound and Carlisle’s rave embattlement Uber has scheduled him in for a gig in autumn, and closer to home Cream sought Mark’s selections as support for the long awaited return of Sasha and Digweed in May. And he keeps dropping the sets on a regular basis as one of the defining elements of The Magnet’s heady hedonistic house music sound, either for their free mashups or as part of his own majestic Coco De Mer. Coupled with a fledgling production side, already taking shape in a number of edits gaining heady audience responses, it’s evocative of why he’s quickly becoming one of the most important figures in the city, and undoubtedly soon enough, beyond it too.
