Chris McGee Intro: Being more of a self-depreciator than a self-promoter, I found reading about myself in the 3rd person making me increasingly queasy. So, none of that for me.
I'd probably been DJ'ing (term used loosely) in private for about 5 years, be that at friend's houses, after parties or lock-ins, before I thought I was good enough to put a mix out there and begin to play out. I feel I am now well past that stage.
I got my first real break recently when I was asked to play for Coco De Mer @ The Magnet, sharing the bill with such luminaries as People Get Real and Jimpster. I've also been asked to play again in November with the headliner being Âme of Innervisions. As well as that I am currently co-promoting a small night in Liverpool, very much in its infancy, called VIVA VIDA. Its a all-welcoming party with hopefully the right vibe and people involved. Our aim when we started was to provide good quality house music without ego; we hope we have succeeded in doing so.
My musical tastes are pretty wide ranging I'd say, with my main DJ influences for where I'm at now being 'old' hands such as Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos and local boy done good, Yousef, as well as the new school of house and techno, Raresh and Reboot to name but two.
I like my mixes to have personality and whether my tunes are deep or slamming, for me the most important element is the groove and soul running through it; knowing someone has taken the time to make the track, so must I when piecing my mixes together. I would say I'm consciously trying to find the right balance between playing the tunes that people may have heard (Since when did it become illegal to play a tune from the Deep House Top 10 Beatport list?!) and showcasing lesser known tunes/producers that I may find and bringing them to people's attention. Keeping it strictly underground, as long the music has all the right elements in it and it makes people dance, it makes no difference to me. Hopefully, when it all comes together it creates the right atmosphere and everyone is in that same happy place. I've also found that since moving behind the decks I find myself trying to visualise being on the dancefloor and feeling what the mood is and where I think the night should go, musically.
From here on in, things are looking good with plenty more postive vibes on the agenda. Really hope you dig my view on things and appreciate what it is I'm trying to achieve; put simply, to see y'all dancing.
