Name: Johnny1Move Music Style: Hip-Hop, Breaks, Soul Outlar-Listed Events: 121 (Rank #18) Outlar Cross-references: LTJ Bukem, Krafty Kuts, Rahzel, Dj Cash Money, Photek, Mr Scruff, Gooseman, Chibuku, Disted Twisco, Hustle, Sunday Service, Zanzibar, Magik Kingdom, Mr McCarthy, Steve Brown, Ben Proudlove, Entity, Firebaby Johnny1Move Intro: Originally from the musical hotbed that is the Midlands, Johnny1Move had his first taste of rocking the disco as a wee 16 year old, spinning his beloved old skool hip hop and rave at parties in and around Staffordshire, and wherever they would have him, through the early 90s. Moving to Manchester in the mid 90s, the expected upsurge in Johnny's profile never materialized, as he found that his musical taste was somewhat at odds with the post-Madchester, Hacienda led scene of the time, and after a soul destroying period of playing the required house tunes just to get gigs, he took a break from playing out, locking himself away to fine tune his turntable skills. Things started to look up for Johnny at the turn of the century- an upsurge in the popularity of hip hop after a few years in the doldrums, coupled with a move down the M62 to Liverpool saw him quickly land himself a residency at the city's ' Sunday Service' night after impressing the promoters with one of his ubiquitous battle sets. The following year saw Johnny developing an interest in the nascent beast that was nu-skool breaks, and he was offered a residency at ' Disted Twisco' after the promoters saw him playing at a house party. By late 02 Johnny was running his own breaks night in the shape of 'Lowdown' at Zanzibar, while keeping his hip hop side ticking over with regular gigs at the likes of Contrast and Sunday Service. A chance Lowdown booking of Manchester's Electrosluts the same year became the first of many collaborations between Lowdown and the neighboring city's Fuse (and Fusetrax label), which has seen the 2 develop close ties as both have established themselves firmly on the Northwest, and National, breaks scene. By 2003, Johnny's star was firmly in the ascendancy. Regular gigs in his hometown, both at his own events and as a guest at the likes of Chibuku, have been augmented by his becoming a regular fixture in the guest slots at Manchester's Sankey's hip hop events, playing recently alongside names like Prime Cuts, Dj Cash Money, Photek, Plus 1, LTJ Bukem, Swamp and Rahzel among others, While his breaks persona has been gigging with the likes of Krafty Kuts, Mr Scruff and Scissorkicks in Liverpool, and in Manchester alongside Evil9, Skool Of Thought, Electrosluts and The Gooseman, courteousy of his Fuse connections. To top it all off, this year has also seen Johnny crowned 'Northwest Turntablism Champion' at Liverpools Magnet, while his debut appearance in the DMC saw him placed a respectable 3rd in the Northern heat (doubly respectable when you note that he was the highest placed 'Northern' entrant- 1st and 2nd being a Londoner and a Scot!). New Year's Eve 2003/4 finished of a busy year with gigs at Chibuku, the Tea Factory, and the infamous (and messy) Hustle after party where the Chibuku crew asked Johnny to become their latest resident. As Johnny's name becomes increasingly ever present in the Northwest's breaks and hip hop scenes, you can be sure that thanks to his blending of pounding breaks, booty shaking hip-hop and top notch turntable skills 2004 should be the best one yet!
