Name: Tane Music Style: House, Jazz, Deep Disco, Electro MySpace: myspace.com/tanepage Outlar-Listed Events: 87 (Rank #31) Outlar Cross-references: Dj Vadim, Scratch Perverts, DJ Food, 2 Many DJs, James Murphy, Chibuku, The Magnet, Babycream, Lake of Stars, Geisha, Will Jazz, Phil Ronayne Tane Intro: I have been Djing in bars and clubs around Liverpool since the age of 18, initially engaging with the hip hop scene of the 90's, but later spanning across several genres be it Soul, Jazz, Disco, "Electro" (now a dirty word), and Techno. I do think I have a refined taste, but not necessarily restricting me to any particular style of music. I think this could apply to a lot of DJ's and musicians in the scene but many find it easier to develop an identity if they stick to one genre, a shame really because I think this ultimately restricts creativity and pigeon holes people. I find myself nowadays mostly playing disco or electro sets, which is fine by me since I love DJ'ing those types of music in clubs, but on a very different end of the scale I co-run a Jazz night every Friday that I love very much. Although, like I said before, pigeon holing yourself can be good self promotion, but at the same time I feel my eclecticism has earned me the experience I have. I have been able to hold down residencies at so many places I think at least partly because I can diversify. I've done this at Babycream, Geisha, The Magnet, Chibuku Shake Shake, Bright Lights Big City, Soul Food, and the African annual festival Lake of Stars, but I also travel to DJ at all kinds of places around the country such as Wax On in Newcastle, Northern Lights in Leeds and Fabric in London. It's a great lifestyle and I've found myself DJ'ing along some huge names such as DJ Food, Dj Vadim and the Scratch Perverts at one end of the spectrum and superstars such as James Murphy, 2 Many DJs, The Rapture and Miss Kitten at the other. I've also found myself co-running and teaching a DJ academe this year which has proved to be quite popular and really rewarding, though I don't want it to take the focus away from what I love most, spinning those ones and twos.
