Name: Dom Chung Music Style: House Outlar-Listed Events: 77 (Rank #35) Outlar Cross-references: Yousef, Derrick May, Seb Fontaine, Chris Duckenfield, Mutiny, Mr Scruff, Chibuku, Cream, The Magnet, Hustle, Creamfields, Steve Brown, Gary Martin Dom Chung Intro: It's been a busy decade for Dom Chung. As resident of Chibuku Shake Shake in London and Liverpool, International Tour resident for Ministry of Sound, and promoter and resident of Global Underground in Leeds and the Hellfire Club in London, he's put himself at the forefront of dance music. Stylistically rocking each and every caveat of underground house music, Dom's musical output combines sassy grooves with rolling rhythms, plucking everything from deep techno bombs to jacking monsters and rump shaking disco, filling all the gaps in-between. It's seen him play at Croatia's Garden Festival, Creamfields, Bestival, Homelands, and V Festival alongside the country's biggest clubs, dropping effortlessly between setting the tone early doors on the warm-up to being the main star of the show. And it's been a mighty hard slog getting there. Just as the nineties and the twenty first century dwindled behind us, Chung found himself in the bright lights of Liverpool as he began studying a degree at LIPA. Whilst he'd cut his teeth raving in Brighton, Bournemouth and London, the trip up north began a much firmer affixation with dance music and its outer reaches. Liverpool was a city in transition, Cream was reaching the end of its tenure, and clubland as a whole was about to take a new direction. It would whip Dom along with it. Despite the odd gig at house parties and small nights, Dom's early DJ forages weren't overly spectacular, until he won a competition for a little known house music club's search for a resident. That club in question was Chibuku Shake Shake, the city's best kept secret that was packing two hundred sweaty wide eyed ravers into the endearingly pokey Lemon Lounge every month as a two fingered salute to the slowly crumbling Superclub Empire. Just as clubland changed tack completely, Chibuku was perfectly poised to take advantage. Upgrading to the Barfly, they epitomised the new school of clubnights, out with the staid predictability of the `superstar' djs and their turgid music policies and ushering in a new set of musical mavericks and wildly eclectic party starters. Dom didn't just swing through on the ride; he became one of the central components in Chibuku's surge for success. His sweltering blends of groove heavy techno and sassy house music became the jewel in the club's crown, so much so that Seb Fontaine showcased a thirty minute mix of Dom's on his Radio One show. He then also started Hustle, a house music party that rocked out with Yousef in a ruined fort, Mr Scruff on a boat and many more inside The Magnet club, acid house heroes like Chris Duckenfield, Mutiny and SubClub's Harri and Domenic all swinging by for some four-four fun. Once Liverpool was conquered Dom took the big move down to London where he became instilled as promotions manager at the Egg. He quickly became a permanent fixture on the East Village scene, getting regular props from the much vaunted Faith crew and inking a residency at Hi-Tek Soul, Derrick May's sonic institution. Then Ministry came calling, becoming the tour resident for their global jaunts and at the helm for their Global Underground parties. This year has seen the kick-starting of Dom's Hellfire Club, a brilliantly word of mouth only promoted soiree that has quickly become one of the most resolute parties bubbling in London's vibrant scene. And Chibuku still shows love, Chung an ever present at their birthday celebrations since 2002 and representing them at Fabric and We Love... Sundays at Space, Ibiza. Right now Dom remains positioned to further cement his status as one of the most promising figures in dance music's ever encompassing global reach. With the pedigree and experience of criss-crossing the world over, the versatility to play across the board to any crowd, and the ingenuity that has already seen him make a series of well received fledgling productions, he's on the verge of world domination. And there's few more deserving of the responsibility.
