Name: Jo Joy Music Style: House, Disco Outlar-Listed Events: 101 (Rank #28) Outlar Cross-references: Carl Dunne, Sonny Wharton, Stacey Pullen, Gary Martin, Carl Craig, DJ Vertigo, Alex Jafar, jazzbo, Silicone Soul, Theo Parrish, CantMixWontMixShdntMixDontMix, Sean Martin, Keith Thompson, Killaflaw, A.Skillz, Matthew T Wilson, Denzil, Jerome Derradji, Da Sunlounge, Igloo, 3345, The Vault Jo Joy Intro: Jo developed a love of Music at an early age, learning to play both organ and cello. However, it wasn't until moving to Liverpool in 1992 to study Music that Jo's passions were unexpectedly hijacked by all things dance. Heavily influenced by University nightlife, the local club scene and her friends' collection of DJ Vertigo tapes, Jo travelled the North West in search of House Music and a good time. Twelve years ago a set of belt-drive decks and a mixer better equipped for cement than music entered the household. Jo took the natural progression of becoming a bedroom DJ. In 2002, after buying lots of vinyl, losing lots of sleep and eventually getting her own set of decks Jo became known as Jo Joy and first ventured into a DJ booth in public. A set at Sankey's Soap in Manchester, where Jo turned up with a carrier bag of records and nearly got charged entry, gave her a taste of things to come. Jo is one of the founder members of Igloo, an Underground House Music collective that has been throwing parties in Liverpool for four and a half years. She can be found spinning regularly with fellow residents Denzil and Carl Dunne. Igloo highlights of the past year include road trips to Chester and Glasgow, the madness of the Dragon, and the recent series of sell-out events in unusual places that have seen the Igloo crew partying on a ship and in a tunnel with the likes of Silicone Soul and Da Sunlounge. Jo is also a founder member of Organic, a night of deliriously deep Disco that saw Jo and Clare Powell spinning alongside local Disco legends in the Dragon. Highlights include the first Birthday extravaganza that paid tribute to Jimmy Saville, complete with unstylish trackies and `Jim Fixed It For Organic' medals. Organic has now moved to The Vault where Jo can be found spinning with new residents Disco Dick, Jay Jay Da Funk and Jamie J. Jo is currently a team member and resident at Leap along with jazzbo, Sean Martin, Gary Martin, Matthew T Wilson and CantMixWontMixShdntMixDontMix. She can also be found spinning eclectic sets including Hip-Hop, Afro-beat, Funk and Disco monthly at Vinyl on Lark Lane. She runs her own company, Sonic Boom with jazzbo, delivering DJ workshops in the local community. Jo's sets include everything from Chigago House, Detroit Techno, Disco, Funk and Soul to Reggae, Jazz, World Music and Drum`n'Bass. She has played in numerous local venues including Lemon Lounge, Magnet and 3345 as well as Brighton, Wrexham and Manchester. Artists she has played alongside include Jerome Derradji, DJ Romain, Keith Thompson, Sonny Wharton, Killaflaw, DJ Noah, Alex Jafar, Silicone Soul and Da Sunlounge. Musical influences include Theo Parrish, Stacey Pullen, Derreck May, Carl Craig, Francios K, A.Skillz, Faze Action, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Ashford and Simpson, Gwen Mccrae, Unlimited Touch and T Connection. Jo is well known for dancing till the sun comes up either behind the decks, on a dancefloor, in a field or on a coffee table in your living room. Silly wigs are often to be found in the vicinity. You can contact Jo Joy by email at jojoy73@yahoo.co.uk where she is open to imaginative offers of any kind.
