Name: Ben Proudlove Music Style: Breaks MySpace: myspace.com/benproudlove Outlar-Listed Events: 80 (Rank #56) Outlar Cross-references: The Beat Monkeys, Rogue Element, Sonny Wharton, Ali B, Johnny1Move, Atomic Hooligan, Rennie Pilgrem, Plump DJs, Dash, Dave Clarke, Stanton Warriors, Erol Alkan, General Jimmy, FreQ Nasty, Dillinja, Soul of Man, Dan Travis, Dj Marky, Smithmonger, Serge Santiago, Stewart Macleod, Cut La Roc, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Evil 9, Splitloop, Gary Martin Ben Proudlove Intro: Ben’s love of dance music came from the same place that many of his generation and geographical disposition would cite as an influence; Bugged Out! The Mancunian institution was the benchmark of what a good club stood for, and Ben’s regular trips from his native Chester to the clubs celebrated Nation residency would cement his love. Whether it was the blistering techno of Dave Clarke, the raucous electro of Erol Alkan or the bolshy breaks of the Plump DJs, Ben lapped up the hard hitting underground dance music on offer. It was the bouncing intensity of the latter’s breaks, alongside other artists like Atomic Hooligan and The Stanton Warriors, which would kick-start his influence further, ushering him to start up record purchasing and DJing. Soon he was hooked, and as University beckoned, Ben’s destiny lied in the advancement of his new found hobby. Soon studying at the University of Liverpool, Ben’s first forays into the world of club promotion would see him take part in Illegal Breaks, a night which saw the booking of local breaks DJ and Superfly promoter Stewart Macleod. This relationship was to be the next big step in his development, with Ben becoming part of the Superfly posse alongside Stew, Dan Travis and General Jimmy. His input quickly affirmed the night’s status as one of the most hedonistic in Liverpool’s increasing cartel of soirees, hauling in the likes of Smithmonger, Ali B and Sonny Wharton down for a plethora of crammed gigs in The Lemon Lounge. Ben also took the Superfly brand to Ibiza, hosting sessions in Kanya and Savannahs, as well as being part of The Superfly Soundsystem when they hosted the hallowed fishtank for a Chibuku session in The Magnet with legend Grandmaster Melle Mel. Further gigs for the club and young DJ, came at the Zanzibar, where Serge Santiago, Koma & Bones and Cut La Roc were some of the high profile guests. More recently, Ben has been an integral aspect of the clubs recent regular flirtations with Chibuku, culminating in a scintillating packed Superfly show as part of the infamous Chibuku NYE sessions. An appearance at up and coming rave du jour Audiojak in Lincoln has also seen him take his electric brand of turbo charged breakbeat and techno further afield than Liverpool, leaving burning ambitions of him continuing his ascent elsewhere in the country – and the bookings are coming in. In 2008 the future looks rosy for both Ben and Superfly. So far he can claim to have played alongside a bulging talent list - Evil 9, FreQ Nasty, Soul of Man, Slyde, Erol Alkan, Rennie Pilgrem, Adam F, Dj Marky, Digitalism and Dillinja - and all these away from Superfly where he has appeared at almost all of the parties he’s been involved in, alongside such acts as The Rogue Element, Vandal, Splitloop and The Beat Monkeys. And of the club with which he has developed an unshirkable bond... well after a somewhat nomadic existence in 2007 they will be returning to their spiritual home of The Lemon Lounge, for a series of bombastic raves on the fourth Friday of every month. Now well into its fourth year and boasting a bursting resident team that now includes Chibuku resident Johnny1Move and UK Corona Champ Dash alongside Stew and Ben, Superfly’s stock has never been stronger in the city. With Ben’s charismatic leadership, pulsating record collection and boundless enthusiasm at the helm, it’d be churlish to expect anything other than a continuation of the club’s ascent into the city’s rave histrionics.
