James De La Cruz Intro: James De La Cruz, erstwhile Avalanches member, DJ extraordinaire and all-round good guy, pulls no punches when it comes to his DJ skills and varied sets.
James’s DJ sets come straight at you from the heart, reflecting an unbridled passion for music and a keen enthusiasm to get the party started. Rather than sticking to any one style of music at any one time, James dips and dives backwards and forward across his extensive collection, putting together sets that are totally out there and 100% unique.
His set is a plethora of feel good sounds… from lost showtunes and emotive fifties doo-wop, mid-eighties Bowie to New Wave New Yorkers The Strokes, to irie realness reggae and Lover’s Rock, to rumbling booty bass and double funky deep house… James has got it and he’s gonna play it.
Not only is his swag of tunes hands down brilliant, the way he constructs his set is like no other, incorporating a whole lot of turntable elements into the mix, scratching and beat juggling disparate tunes on the back of one another to come up with something completely new. James loves to pick up on the mood of the crowd, ebbing and flowing mellifluously, leaving no musical stone left unturned, no toe left untapping. His energy and enthusiasm are undeniably infectious. Over the last year James has been touring as tambourine man for The Avalanches, playing keyboards and DJing onstage with them throughout tours of Australia, Europe and America.
