Disfunktion aka Marc Pantling hails from Leicester and has been into drum & bass ever since discovering it through friends at secondary school around 1991. From his early teens he was listening to rave music at parties and in his friend's houses and started attending various under 18s raves around Leicester as well as managing to blag his way into a number of over 18's events also!
As the music started to evolve into the jungle/drum & bass sound he became hooked and at the age of 15 attended his first big rave on July 29th 1993 namely Dance Planet at the Sanctuary in Milton Keynes. He continued to attend nights around the Uk such as Helter Skelter, Pandemonium, Flight Night and Total Kaos and seeing djs like
LTJ Bukem ,
Fabio,
Jumping Jack Frost, SS, Mastersafe to name a few he knew that he wanted to be a dj. It was then that he met a group of likeminded people through a friend he had made recently, another local Dj then went by the name of Dj Insane (Jay). And we started playing local parties and small nights around Leicester.
A couple of years later in 1995 an opportunity came up for
Disfunktion to play back to back with Dj
Jaydan at a big Formation Records night at the Underground in Leicester. It was a nerve racking experience as they were performing with the likes of Darren J, SS, Dj Ron,
L Double General Levy and Warren G. It went really well though and it was a first taste of playing to a big crowd and they both knew they wanted more. Over the next couple of years and having dabbled in happy hardcore under the alias Dj Detro,
Disfunktion knew that it was Drum & bass that was he truly enjoyed playing but the scene had gone a little too techy for him so needing to satisfy his craving for Amen Breaks he turned his attention to the
LTJ Bukem / Logical Progression movement. Having enjoyed attending, listening and playing the intelligent style of drum & Bass it was a natural progression into the now emerging liquid side of things.
It was at this point that he and Dj
Jaydan decided that as they had played back 2 back many times in the past and as they had become good friends they may have more success if they joined up under 1 name enabling twice the networking ability. Jaydans brother Tony then suggested the name
Disfunktion and they agreed that was the name they would use for the venture. As the djing and bookings continued to grow along with the night Genetic they had set up in 2001 with another good friend Sam,
Disfunktion started to attend studio sessions with Jay and his brother and really liked the creativity behind writing and Producing Drum & Bass. After seeing this he knew this is something he wanted to pursue at some point but was struggling to build himself a studio due to everything being hardware based and very expensive.
After dabbling in a bit of production
Disfunktion spent most of his spare time promoting Genetic, then realized there was a gap in the market for a up & coming night called Konnection which has helped launch many up & coming dj's and mc's. From that night he started a night called Rotation aimed at promoting new producers to the scene, and after featuring many artists this night has become known around the midlands as a good launch pad for new producers. It was at this point that
Disfunktion concentrated on promoting and working in the industry on other projects and
Jaydan concentrated on production. Then in 2006 after a few years of producing
Jaydan finally had signed releases out and it was at that point
Jaydan needed to have a solo artist name and having been called
Jaydan previous to
Disfunktion he decided to roll with it and due to all The hard work
Disfunktion and
Jaydan had put in it was decided that Marc would continue To be known as
Disfunktion.
Disfunktion intends on progressing with production but has his fingers in many pies within the industry to include being a valuable part of Vision Artist Agency, running 3 respected drum and bass nights, Genetic being one of the midlands biggest, longest running drum & bass parties with plans to work closely with the massive Valve sound in the future. As well as working for Propaganda Records and Formation Records in the past
Disfunktion certainly has had his hands tied over the years and for the foreseeable future but with a brand new studio being built he intends on progressing with production and hopes to have releases out by 2008.
Disfunktion has been Djing now for 13 years and has been on the circuit on a weekly basis for the last 5 years and describes his style as straight up party tunes although he plays all genres of d&b and feels the dud/liquid sound as well as the jump up mayhem.
Disfunktion has performed at hundreds of venues across the UK with regular plays at some of the larger parties to include Steppa sounds (main room Germany) XS sound (main room Belgium), Raveology (main room air nightclub, Birmingham) Detonate (main room The Bomb, Nottingham), Pressure (main room Warrick uni, Warrick) Metropolis (valve sound, Leeds), Decibel (main room 52 degrees, Preston) Along with regular appearances at nights all over the Uk, he has also gained various residencies around the UK at nights such as Genetic (Leicester), Foul Play (Liverpool), Strictly DnB (Northampton), Bazooka (Wales), Frequency (Northampton), Focus (Nottingham), Rotation (Leicester)
Amongst many credentials one that stands out has to be when
Disfunktion was invited as a guest with
Jaydan on Sappos BBC Radio 1Xtra show in November 2005 to do an interview and a guest mix. For them both that was a true stamp of recognition and is talks of him appearing on BBC 1xtra in the foreseeable future.
With an increasingly busying Dj schedule now including worldwide appearances, being part of a respected agency and promotions team the future for
Disfunktion Is looking bright.
