Superfly

Intro: 2010 – The turn of the new decade saw Superfly return, original iconic branding in tow, for what has proven to be our best spell yet. Finally the time and more importantly the space is right, to continue what we started…

Superfly has been reborn.

With old Superfly Soundsystem heads Stewart Macleod, Ben Proudlove and Dash and new member DEON (the freshest designer to hit Liverpool in a good while), heading the night, it would be sensible to expect Superfly to exceed where it left off.

It's new home? The Magnet – Home of the underground.

2009 allowed the lads some space to concentrate on their own projects but this did not prevent them holding parties for causes extremely close to their core. 'Floydstock' (which also represented 6 years of the ` fly) saw EVERYONE from back in the day in The Lemon Lounge to remember an incredible friend who sadly left us. `Ugandance' allowed the System to raise funds to support orphans in Uganda – an issue central to close friends of ours.

2008 saw the Superfly Crew bringing their brand headlong into its fifth year of promotions. Having taken the Superfly brand to Lincoln, Manchester, Berlin and Ibiza at this point, a boat party on the Thames saw them punctuate the capital for the first time...and what a punctuation it was. This night continues to echo in the thoughts of those who were there – sublime.

In 2007 originals Dan and the General left the crew for pastures new, which allowed scratch monkey Johnny1Move - DMC jock, to join up with the boys after his heavy Butane project ended. Shortly after, a powerhouse party in the old LEAF warehouse, sponsered by Red Bull, with The Rouge Element smashing things sideways and a stunning fourth birthday with Chew the Fat! and Lake of Stars Festival Malawi bringing Vandal, Merka and Splitloop down to party, cemented the night as one of Liverpool's finest. The boys ended the year in stunning style, returning to the Barfly's Bar for a series gigs for Liverpool champions Chibuku Shake Shake allowing them to showcase their empathetic style. '07 culminated with a devastating INK ownership on New years Eve where they boys absolutely rocked it.

2006 marked the point where the Superfly brand picked up even more speed. Relocating for a staggeringly good end of term bash at the Zanzibar with Koma & Bones at the helm where well over 300 partygoers sashayed to their beats, it saw them kick-starting a residency at the venue in November. Enlisting We Love... Ibiza resident Serge Santiago for their third birthday celebrations, they went on to haul the likes of Cut La Roc, Brothers Bud and Superstyle Deluxe together as part of a new music policy which saw total focus on breaks.

2005 had Superfly on the first Friday of every month, now officially the point where the weekend began. A DJ-Mag feature on their Birthday brought a sense of renewed attention, as did the enlistment of Aussie breaks Badboy Smithmonger, as quarterly resident, beginning a series of events which saw the likes ofAli B, James Mowbray, The Freeestylers, Sonny Wharton and Music for Freaks' Jonny Rock among the high profile guests. They also rocked up withChibuku for the first time, hosting the fishtank as the Liverpool rave standard bearers hauled in Melle Mel down for a special one off gig in May. And the reputation for sterling partying continued ever more, the then five retaining a tremendous knack in uncovering several key afterparty venues and regularly cramming The Lemon Lounge full of reckless revellers.

Little more than a gathering of a few mates in The Lemon Lounge in 2003, 2004 marked the beginning of Superfly as one of Liverpool's most well-loved soirees, as the original crew quickly turned the scene into a rowdy fracas which resulted in several missed lectures and university sick notes being delivered. Relocating briefly to the Barfly, the pivotal moment came on a Thursday night in June, when long after most of the students have disappeared home, they succeeded in cramming in excess of 250 punters into the bar for a night of excess that finally finished at some point on the Saturday after some devilishly intense after-partying. The Superfly legend was born. With a music policy blending breaks, house, techno and electro and a manifesto of sheer hedonism at any cost, Liverpool was suddenly enriched.

May 2003. At one of the epic house parties that adorn Liverpool's student district, fledgling DJs `General' Jimmy Coultas and Stewart Macleod have just finished an epic seven-hour set that caused much carnage in the embattled house they have taken camp in. Several angry neighbours, considerably more partying friends and more importantly, an agreement made in a hedonistic haze about putting on an event together resulted in the beginning of Superfly on a wet and windy Thursday in November of the same year, adorning the name of one of Jimmy's favourite albums, the superlative blaxploitation classic from Curtis Mayfield.

What lies in the future for this much loved Liverpool institution…well, a few things are for sure…we are back…refreshed…with a new vision for our club music policy… and ready to start the weekends again.
